BDB pleads for Danube expansion version C 2.80

Danube expansion version C 2.80 would make ship traffic between Straubing and Vilshofen more economically effective and more secure

The Federal Association of German Inland Water Transportation (Bundesverband der Deutschen Binnenschiffahrt e.V./BDB) pushes politics to immediately eliminate the biggest bottleneck of the Danube. Only version C 2.80 of the Danube expansion on the segment between Straubing and Vilshofen could reach the minimum draught of 2.5 metres required for shipping on 301 days per year. Based on the expansion targets of the European Commission only version C 2.80, which means expansion including the construction of a dam near Aicha and the construction of a lock close to the river segment Mühlhamer Schleife, provides the option of co-financing by the European Union, as the BDB informs in a press release.

“All parametres support Danube expansion version C 2.80. The river shipping industry and the shipping industry are urgently in need of more reliable transport options on the Danube, thus allowing to use the full potential of river shipping“, says BDB president Georg Hötte.According to BDB the urgently required improvement of security of shipping traffic can only be reached through version C 2.80, as only expansion with dam and lock can make the Mühlhamer Schleife – with a high potential for accidents – free for shipping. Traffic experts prognosticate that accident figures could be halved by 2025 in spite of considerably increasing cargo volumes.
