BLG AutoRail takes over 1,000th special wagon

Companies of the European automobile industry show great demand for BLG AutoRail’s transport offer

The automobile industry is using the transport services of BLG AutoRail to an increasing extent. The systematic expansion of the special wagon offer for the rail transport of new cars is a clear sign therefore. On 16 July the 1,000th railcar was taken over and baptised at BLG’s car terminal in Kelheim.

BLG AutoRail started with their first own train in autumn 2008. Fowllowing 100,000 vehicles in the first fully operative year 2009, they transported 320,000 cars on the railway last year. This year the expected figure is about 500,000 units. In total the fleet shall grow to 1,300 wagons before 2013. This is about 75 block trains.

The transport offer of BLG AutoRail for the railway includes also a shunting station in Falkenberg, Brandenburg. This is where wagon groups carrying export vehicles from several manufacturing plants are joined to block trains and driven to the car terminals in the North Sea. However, also regular rail operations to the car terminal Kelheim are on the schedule of BLG AutoRail.

Kelheim is the strongest location of BLG in southern Germany. At this site the company receives vehicles procured with two river vessels from Eastern Europe on a regular basis, in order to control and process them at the technical centre before delivery to the car retailers. The car terminal Kelheim covers an area of 500,000 m² and has a capacity for 30,000 vehicles. About 200 employees care about the handling and technical processing of the vehicles. In 2011 a total of 175,000 vehicles were handled there. Total volume of BLG in car logistics amounted to 6.5 million vehicles.
