River traffic shows considerable growth at Romanian seaport Constanza

The Romanian seaport Constanza showed an inconsistent development of cargo traffic in 2008. Although the total volume rose 7 per cent to more than 60 million tons, some cargo types showed considerable declines. Whereas throughput of steel products fell 1.6 million tons compared to 2007, other cargo types had substantial increases: cereals (+ 2.4 million tons), coal and coke (+ 2.3 million tons) and iron ore and scrap (+ 0.6 million tons). Container traffic amounted to 1.38 million TEU (minus 2%), but was able to rise tonnage by 3 per cent or 386,979 tons.

River traffic rose 5 per cent or 620,000 tons to 11.38 million tons. In this segment transit and export were the main growth areas. The number of dispatched river vessels beat the mark of 8,000 units.
