Container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd achieves impressive turnaround

Transport volumes of Germany’s biggest container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd rose on all important routes in 2010

 

The Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd profited in the past financial year 2010 from the positive industrial trend. In the lately published annual report the enterprise showed an EBIT of EUR 583 million, which is the best result in the company’s 164-years history. In the year 2009 this item showed a loss of EUR  341.9 million. Annual revenues 2010 amounted to EUR 6.2 billion.

Hapag-Lloyd’s transport volumes grew 7 per cent compared to the previous year to 4.95 million TEU. Transport volume on the Atlantic routes increased 8 per cent to 1.14 million TEU compared to 2009. Volumes on the services from and to Latin America grew 18 per cent in the same period to 1.08 million TEU. On the Far East routes they transported 1.1 million TEU, which is 6 per cent more than in 2009. Transpacific volume rose 11 per cent to 1.09 million TEU.

Germany’s leading container shipping company offers about 80 liner services operated by 6,900 employees at 300 locations in 114 countries. The fleet consists of  135 ships (59 owned units) with a total capacity of 605,000 TEU. The container stock of 1.025 TEU includes one of the world’s largest and most modern reefer container fleets. By the end of 2010 Hapag-Lloyd has ordered four large scale container vessels with a capacitiy of each 13,200 TEU.
