DB Schenker ships two Siemens-“rail-colossus“ to Vienna

Siemens railcars for Russian regional trains travel with DB Schenker from Germany to RTA Rail Tech Arsenal in Vienna for cool tests

In the past days DB Schenker has proved its competence as a forwarding company handling projects from and to Austria. On behalf of Siemens the forwarding group took over two railcars, destined for Russia, at the plant in Krefeld and transported them to Vienna. The units weighting about 60 tons and a length of 26 metres, 3.5 wide and about 5 metres high, will pass a cool test at the RTA Rail Tec Arsenal.

As the railcars are designed for the Russian broad gauge, they could not be transported to Vienna on the rail. Thus DB Schenker loaded the wagons to a river vessel in Germany on 23 March. On the vessel they travelled 1,350 kilometres via the Rhine, Main, Main-Danube channel and the Danube, arriving on 4 April in Bad Deutsch Altenburg east of Vienna.

From there special trucks brought them in two overnight stages to the Rail Tec Arsenal in Vienna. The forwarding group was also in charge of organising road barriers and rail crossings. When the climate tests are finished, the railcars will be brought to Amsterdam by river vessels.

Siemens delivered a total of 38 five-parts travel trains named Desiro RUS from Krefeld, Germany to Russia. DB Schenker organises the transport from Krefeld via the Rhine to Amsterdam and from there to Sassnitz on a coaster. In the port of Sassnitz the wagons can be put on Russian broad gauge railway and formed to a train, and subsequently transported to Ust Luga, Russia, via a rail ferry. The chassis for the Russian trains are made at the Siemens site in Graz. The first train was delivered to Russia in early March. From 2013 the regional trains will be used in Kasan and Sotchi, also as a transport mean during the Olympic Games 2014.
