Gebrüder Weiss sets a sign for environmental protection

Wind farm in northern Germany consisting of four wind turbines is the latest acquisition within the system network of Gebrüder Weiss:

Gebrüder Weiss has completed yet another sustainability project. In June, the Austrian transport and logistics provider acquired a wind farm in northern Germany from an experienced project developer. The purchase was completed retroactively on 1 April 2011. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The wind farm, which is fully owned by Gebrüder Weiss, consists of four wind turbines with a nominal capacity of two megawatts each. The turbines have been in operation since the beginning of the year and are already feeding electricity into the power grid. Around 20 gigawatt hours of electricity will be produced per year. ”That accounts for more than 100 per cent of the Group’s energy requirements, which we can now generate ourselves, ecologically and sustainably,” explained board member Wolfram Senger-Weiss. In addition, self-production of energy forms a natural hedge for Gebrüder Weiss against rising energy prices.

“With this investment, we wish to once again set a clear example in environmental protection. The sustainable handling of available resources is an important aspect of our social responsibility as a family business. The disaster in Japan has shown us how fragile our energy production is. The utilisation of renewable materials for the production of electricity is a valuable alternative in view of the independence from fossil fuels,” continued Senger-Weiss. The Gebrüder Weiss Wind Farm will save around 12,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
