Gefco takes over coordination of rail transport by its own

Logistics group Gefco performs a change from user to integrator and coordinator in vehicles transport on the railway

The Gefco group headquartered in Paris took over the coordination of its European rail transport operations by its own. To this end they charged three private rail companies to transport vehicles on the railway within France and to several other European countries. Based on their own rail transport system they were handling some parts of the goods flow on the railway, as the automotive and industrial logistics enterprise announces in a press release.

In this new concept Euro Cargo Rail, a subsidiary of DB Schenker Rail, will serve the region of middle and eastern France. The Eurotunnel subsidiary Europorte France is to serve the south of France and Colas Rail, a company of the Bouygues group, will serve the north and west of the country. Joining route networks and competencies of these three providers was done in agreement with the French rail network operator Réseau Ferré de France (RFF). “Gefco advances from a user to a real integrator and coordinator of the entire rail transportations“, explains Philippe Robert, in charge of the equipment for vehicle transport in the group.

Reservation and utilisation of shunting stations in Gevrey near Dijon and Achères, close to Paris, is an integrated part of the rearranged rail logistics strategy. This reduces considerably the transit time of the operations. At the moment 150 trains per week are operated by order of Gefco, thus transporting around 500,000 vehicles per year. On the medium term the enterprise plans to increase weekly capacities to 250 trains.
