Hamburg Süd above sector average in 2008

Substantial increase in turnover with Hamburg Süd Group

In 2008, which was a difficult year for the global trade shipping industry, the Hamburg Süd Group, which also comprises the Brazilian shipping company Aliança, was able to raise transport volume by about 25 per cent compared to the previous year to almost 2.7 million TEU. Thus the sector average was beat once again. Turnover rose 24 per cent from EUR 3.6 billion to EUR 4.5 billion. Liner shipping made up 84 per cent of total turnover, tramp shipping and other activities yielded 16 per cent.

The fleet operated by the Hamburg Süd Group consisted of 167 vessels on average in 2008, of which were 32 owned by the group itself. 54 vessels were deployed in tramp shipping and 113 in liner shipping. The container vessels deployed in liner services offered a slot capacity of about 292,000 TEU (plus 32 per cent compared to the previous year).
