“Horrible balances“ of Austria’s forwarding industry

Austria’s freight forwarding enterprises must keep on saving

It is only the reduced costs that allow Austria’s freight forwarders to generate relatively acceptable profit margins. The enterprises reduce their staff, because this is one of the few variable costs. In 2009 the industry shed 7 to 10 per cent of the jobs. More cuts can not be excluded, as the presidium of the Zentralverband Spedition & Logistik (the Austrian central association for forwarding) disclosed in a press reception last week in Vienna.

Harald Bollmann, President of the ZV, used dramatic expressions to describe the current situation of the forwarding industry: „The companies’ balances are horrible. Companies that achieve a break even for 2009 can consider themselves lucky.“ In 2009 Austria’s freight forwarders registered a decline in quantities of up to 10 per cent. Combined with less average weights and more urgent consignments while the pressure on freight charges grew steadily, this is a heavy duty for the forwarding industry.
