Humbaur buys insolvent trailer manufacturer Kögel

Medium-sized investor is new owner of Kögel company

About three months after the Kögel Group has filed for insolvency its ownership changes. On 30 October the disposal of the company to Humbaur, a corporate group from Gersthofen near Augsburg in Germany, was settled. “With Humbaur we were able to win a medium-sized entrepreneur from the region to take over Kögel. They are interested in long-term continuation and show clear commitment to the production site in the vicinity of Burtenbach“, the liquidator Arndt Geiwitz explained the decision.

Besides to trademark rights and production plants the entrepreneur Ulrich Humbaur as the sole owner will also take over 442 of the former 763 employees. For a transition period of six months 233 employees will be working in a transfer company, the others will retire or quit from their fixed term contracts. The costs for the transfer company amounting to EUR 3.6 million are shared by the new investor Humbaur, the liquidator and involved banks by one third each.

Established in 1957 the Humbaur-company is today a leading manufacturer of trailers in Europe. The owner-managed enterprise has around 450 employees who generate an annual turnover of around EUR 120 million. The product portfolio comprises car and truck trailers ranging from 750 kilograms to 40 tons of total weight. Three years ago Humbaur entered the market of semi trailers.

The owner Ulrich Humbaur wants to continue Kögel as an independent brand and enterprise. He plans a two-brand strategy including different products and own distribution activities. The new enterprise will operate under the name Kögel Trailer GmbH & Co. KG.
