Inauguration of Canon’s “Kyosei” in Rotterdam

Canon’s 100,000 m² warehouse in Rotterdam covers a collaboration with the freight forwarder Nippon Express for the coming ten years

On 6th February the Japanese multinational Canon and its logistic service provider Nippon Express, have officially opened a 100,000 m²  warehouse at Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. It is situated in the direct vicinity of five large container terminals with a, initially, joint container handling capacity of over 15 million TEU.

In the new center, Canon bundles the distribution activities that were previously taking place from three other locations in the Netherlands. It is part of a review of Canon’s supply chain network that is aimed at optimizing efficiency in order to be prepared for future developments, according to Perry Buenen, Chief of Supply Chain Management & Canon Unity Programme Europe, Middle East & Africa. “The new warehouse is perfectly tailored to the emphasis on marine transport over air transport. That means, more to container shipping and from a larger warehouse, centralized in Rotterdam.”

In 2014, Canon opted for Rotterdam on the basis of a business case and a formal tender procedure. This included a reduction of operational costs and lower inbound costs. The tender covers a collaboration for the coming 10 years and was won by Nippon Express. Sustainability also played an important role in the process. Sustainability is an essential part of Canon’s corporate philosophy “Kyosei”, which means living and working together for the common good.

The supply chain is a very essential process within Canon according to Buenen. “With the great variety of products and customers, an integrated supply chain process has top priority. All Canon products originate from Asia. Previously, an overwhelming number of consumer goods were shipped by air. Now, transport is increasingly shifting to seaborne cargo.” Canon has four major distribution centers in Europe: the most important one is in Rotterdam and the others are in Bratislava, Madrid and Moscow.

Canon Europe is responsible for a third of Canon’s worldwide sales. There are 21 locations within Europe, servicing 116 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Afrika (EMEA ). Its growth strategy focuses, among other things, on existing markets with the current product portfolio such as printers and digital cameras. It is particularly in Russia and Africa where it sees potential for growth. It also aims to introduce new products on the existing markets. For instance in software development and IRIS software.
