Less cargo transported on Austria’s railway network in 2012

Transport volume and performance on Austria’s railway network was below previous year’s level in 2012; sole increases in transit

Cargo transport on Austria’s railway network has suffered losses in 2012. According to a report of Statistics Austria, a total of 100.5 million tonnes of freight was transported on Austria’s railway network by all domestic and foreign railway companies. Transport performance on Austrian territory totalled 19.5 billion tonne-kilometres. Compared with the preceding year, the total transport volume decreased by 6.6 per cent in 2012; performance was 4.2 per cent lower than in 2011.

Inland transport accounted for 30.9 million tonnes, 11.9 per cent less than in 2011. International goods receipt amounted to 30.2 million tonnes, international goods dispatch to 18.8 million tonnes, meaning declines of 7.2 per cent and 6.8 per cent, respectively. Solely transit at 20.6 million tonnes (+2.7%) was above the previous year’s level.

Transport volume of domestic railway companies amounted to 95.4 million tonnes in the reporting period (share 2012: 95.0 %; share 2011: 95.9%) and hence 7.6 per cent below the previous year’s level, showing increasing declines in the course of the year (Q1: -4.7%, Q2: -6.2%, Q3: -9.4% and Q4: -9.9%). Domestic transport performance amounted to 18.5 billion tkm (-5.6%) and has also shown losses in each quarter compared to 2011 (Q1/2012: -4.5%, Q2/2012: -4.5%, Q3/2012: -3.7%, Q4/2012: -9.5%).

The mainly transported goods groups were the following: “vehicles, machines and other goods" (38.6 million t, share: 40.5%), “agricultural and forestry products” (12.3 million t, share: 12.9%) and “ores and metal scrap" (10.7 million t, share: 11.3%). These categories accounted for close to two thirds of the transport volume. 11.3 million tonnes or about 12 per cent of the tonnage were defined as dangerous goods.

Half of the transport volume (47.9 million t) covered a maximum distance of 150 kilometres. 18.6 million tonnes thereof (share: 19.5%) were carried 101 to 150 kilometres. About one third (32.4 million t) was carried on distances of at least 251 but at maximum 500 kilometres. About 2 million tonnes of goods were carried more than 500 kilometres.
