LH Cargo kept utilisation stable in 2012

Lufthansa Cargo: Confidence and new Boeing freighters for 2013 despite decreasing tonnage last year

For 2012 Lufthansa Cargo registered a decrease in tonnage. Tonnage was down 8.5 per cent from 1.8 to 1.7 million tonnes of freight and mail. In spite of the declining cargo volume, the Lufthansa airfreight subsidiary kept utilisation of its aircraft capacities on a stable level through trimming capacity by more than eight per cent. With about 8.7 billion sold freight-tonne-kilometres (ftk) in 2012, the cargo load factor rose marginally to 69.6 per cent in comparison with the previous year.

“We had to contend with an extremely difficult market environment in 2012. So we focused firmly on capacity utilisation and the profitability of our freighter routes,” Lufthansa Cargo Chairman and CEO Karl Ulrich Garnadt emphasises in a current press release. The Cargo chief is looking confidently to the new year: “We can see green shoots of economic recovery in key airfreight markets. Our flexible approach allows us to respond fast and purposefully to emergent market opportunities and quickly increase capacity again to accommodate stronger demand.” In the autumn of this year, Lufthansa Cargo is awaiting delivery of the first two of five brand-new Boeing 777 freighters on order.
