Lufthansa Cargo posts strong first quarter of 2011

Lufthansa Cargo forwarded almost 20 per cent more air freight in the period from January to March 2011

Lufthansa Cargo has continued last year’s strong growth course throughout the first quarter 2011. Forwarded freight volume rose 19.9 per cent year-on-year to 469,391 tons. America routes showed the most impressive growth (up 25.4 per cent), followed by Asia/Pacific (up 19.2 per cent) and Europe (up 16.8 per cent).

Available capacity was significantly raised in the first three months of the year. Re-activation of cargo aircrafts that were not used during the crisis, the fleet expansion of AeroLogic to a total of eight aircrafts and the re-launched marketing activities of Austrian Airlines’ freight capacities let the offering rise by 22.8 per cent. This plus was almost completely deducted and a high cargo load factor of 69.9 per cent was reached.

“Lufthansa Cargo is well positioned in the world’s growth markets“, CEO Karl Ulrich Garnadt explains. Thanks to our flexible network management and a strong distribution performance we were able to achieve double-digit growth figures on all trade lanes.”

A transport volume of around 1.8 million tons of freight and mail shipments as well as 8.9 billion sold freight ton kilometres in 2010 made Lufthansa Cargo one of the world’s leading air freight transport enterprises. The company has currently about 4,500 employees around the globe. The focus of Lufthansa Cargo lies in airport-airport business.

The route network covers around 300 destinations in more than 100 countries. Turnover in the 2010 fiscal year amounted to approximately EUR 2.8 billion.
