Port of Zeebrugge returned to growth in 2010
Substantial increase in the segments ro-ro traffic, new cars logistics, container traffic and conventional freight at Port of Zeebrugge
In the Belgian seaport of Zeebrugge, cargo throughput showed a trend towards growth again last year. With 40.6 million tons of goods they handled 10.6 per cent more than in 2009, as the Association Port of Zeebrugge Interests announces in a folder. THe main growth drivers were the ro-ro and the new cars segments. Thanks to the significantly risen demand on the routes to the UK and Spain, ro-to traffic showed a 30.3 per cent-increase to 12.39 million tons. In total they handled 1.011 million trucks. New cars throughput improved by 24.6 per cent to 1.6 million units, but was clearly below the 2008 figure. Container traffic grew 6.1 per cent to 2.5 million TEU. The 28.1 per cent-rise to 1.1 million tons in the conventional cargo-segment was manly accounted for by importations of cellulose from Brazil as well as shipping wood and potatoes.
