New block train for GM in Russia

GCS/Ruscon launches Ust-Luga-Nizhniy Novgorod block train service for General Motors Korea

A new block train service in Russia is being launched this month by GCS/Ruscon, the logistics and intermodal operator within the GCS container transport group (Global Container Service). The new service will cover a distance of over 1,100 km from the new Ust-Luga Container Terminal (ULCT) to Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia’s fifth largest city.

GCS/Ruscon establishes this regular block train service on behalf of General Motors (GM) Korea. About 800 40ft-containers per month will be transported from the Ust-Luga Container Terminal to Nizhniy Novgorod, where the Russian motor manufacturer GAZ is assembling Chevrolet Aveo cars for GM. Maersk Line carries the containers from South Korea to ULCT. Capacity on the trains to Ust-Luga is offered to third parties including carriers and shippers.

Ruscon will use its own flat-car wagons to form the trains and recently set up its own office in Ust-Luga. In addition to railway transportation, Ruscon is arranging port and customs transit formalities for this project. Ruscon is one of the leading transport operators in the Russian container industry today. Its staff counting more than 700 people in nine offices throughout Russia and CIS, handles almost 150,000 TEU a year.
