New Harbour Master of Rotterdam

René de Vries to succeed longstanding Harbour Master Jaap Lems

As of 1 March 2010 René de Vries (49) will assume his new function of Harbour Master. Thus he succeeds Jaap Lems, who – holding this function since 1989 – is going to retire. The Port of Rotterdam is no unknown territory for De Vries; his career with the Port Authority started in 1982. In his present position he manages the Traffic Planning & Operations department, which has 220 employees.

After a selection procedure of several months and in consultation with public authorities, the Port Authority decided in favour of René de Vries due to his combination of experience, knowledge and personality.

The State Harbour Master directs around 570 people and is responsible for the fast, safe and clean handling of shipping traffic in the port of Rotterdam around the clock. He forms part of the Port of Rotterdam Authority and is accountable to the Municipal Executive or the Ministry of Transport.
