New lightweight containers with Etihad Airways

Cooperation with Jettainer results in weight and cost reductions for Etihad Airways aircargo transports

Etihad Airways based in the United Arab Emirates and Jettainer introduced new ALF lightweight containers with immediate effect. These new units are twice as wide as the common standard containers and take up the whole width of the planes. With a weight of about 130 kgs these new leightweight version weigh almost 34 % less than the conventional unit weighing about 196 kgs.

In the course of this year Etihad Airways will commission 250 of these new containers. The weight and kerosene reduction which are a result of this decision will amount in cost reductions of about USD 350.000 in 2013 and USD 1,1 mill. in 2014. this will lead to a forecast reduction of CO2 emissions of 1.100 tons for 2013 and 4.000 tons for 2014. The certified containers were developed by Zodiac Aerospace Air Cargo Equipment. They were manufactured using a number of different inherently stable compound materials.

"The introduction of these especially big lightweight containers in the passenger and cargo operations clearly shows our continous efforts towards innovation and sustainable logistics. We want to make sure that our services remain globally competitive", says David Kerr, Vice President Cargo Etihad Airways.

Alexand Plümacher, general manager Jettainer GmbH, adds: "We will continue our cooperation with partners such as Etihad Airways and Zodia Aerospace Cargo Equipment to continually improve the quality of our products and services. Looking for new possibilities regarding the weight reduction of our customers‘ cargo fleets will also remain top of our agenda."
