Novelty in training of skippers with Imperial Shipping GmbH
Imperial Shipping GmbH combines training and talent management; training on a modern radar/navigating simulator
Imperial Shipping Group, Europe’s leading river shipping company based in Duisburg, opens up a new chapter in training their helmspersons as skippers. The talent management system presented these days is an instrument showing young talents the way throughout training in an early and targeted manner.
The courses organised by the employers’ association of the German river shipping industry, taking place at the skippers professional college in Duisburg-Homberg, are aimed at training young helmspersons and show them shipping-relevant topics. This combination of practic and theoretic training shall facilitate later cooperation of helmspersons and administration. Accomodation of the course participants and practical classes are aboard the training ship Rhein. A highlight of the education at the skippers professional college is the training with a modern radar/navigation simulator, allowing skipper candidates to collect first practical experience 1:1 with reaility, without the danger of expensive damages due to beginner’s faults.
For trainings within the new talent management Imperial Shipping and the shipping company Veerhaven B.V. has invested into the simulator of the development centre for shipping technology and transport systems called DST, in order to optimise the route modelling of the Rhine segments and estuary, which are nautical challenges for the river shipping company. In total 25 to 30 skipper candidates shall be invited this year to participate in the courses and training with the simulator.
In addition to the shipping company’s internal offering the future skippers will also gain the required patents for the navigation of river vessels, the use of radar systems and more nautic equipment, as well as knowledge about transporting dangerous goods on the waterway.
