ÖBB’s rolling road carries more trucks across the Brenner

Rolling road of Rail Cargo Austria shows positive development on the Brenner corridor

The trains of Rail Cargo Austria’s rolling road service (ROLA) showed a good balance after the first four months of this year. The cargo transport division of the ÖBB group carried 47,300 truck units on it rolling road, which is 5,000 or up 11.5 per cent more trucks than in the same period last year.

In total Rail Cargo Austria operates 32 daily trains on its ROLA on the Brenner corridor, between Wörgl and the Brennersee terminal (28 trains) and between Wörgl and Trient (four trains). Current capacity utilisation is 84 per cent. Last year ROLA carried about 131,000 trucks on the rail. The objective is to increase the figure this year.

The intelligent combination of rail and road, enabling trucks and drivers to cover certain distances of their route environmentally friendly on the rail, relieves the road and the environment, and has many advantages for the customers. Cost can be saved as no road tolls must be paid, and as a result of less wear and tear of the vehicles. Truck drivers can relax in an accompanying rail wagon, which makes is easier to comply with the legal rest periods or the driving ban during the night and on weekends, while the cargo is still moving towards its destination without losing time. Traffic congestion is no issue with rail transport, and the environment is saved through less exhaust gases and fine particulate in the air.

According to a recently published study of the Environment Agency Austria accompanied combined transport across the Brenner reduces nitrogen emissions by 93 per cent, and particulate matter emissions by 61 per cent compared to road transport.
