Planzer group’s Alpin Cargo AG to start shortly

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn transfers its cargo throughput and distribution divisions to a Planzer group brand effective 1 October:

Taking action in order to meet future market requirements, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is outsourcing its business division cargo transport to Planzer Transports (Valais) SA, effective 1 October 2011. In a tight cooperation the railway company will concentrate on pure rail traffic, while Planzer will be developing the cargo activities with the brand name Alpin Cargo – logistics partner of Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. As throughput and fine distribution in the region Oberwallis will be managed by Alpin Cargo, six employees will change from Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, at the locations Visp and Zermatt to Alpin Cargo.

This reorganisation enables Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn to operate the cargo division cost effectively throughout the future. The railway company transports 40,000 to 50,000 tons of cargo per year in Mattertal, which is an important contribution to the environmentally friendly supply of the destination Zermatt. Due to the market development and uncertainty about compensation for meter gauge cargo transport from 2015, the company management saw itself obliged to develop its cargo business in future together with a strong and reliable partner from the logistics industry, and to develop new market potential.
