Port of Vienna opens Europe’s biggest salt warehouse

Winter service of MA 48 is equipped for extreme winters thanks to a new salt warehouse at the Port of Vienna:

The newly constructed salt warehouse at the Port of Vienna was inaugurated on 5 December. At the ceremony Vienna’s Environment Councillor Ulli Sima, Wien Holding Manager Peter Hanke, the head of MA 48, Josef Thon, as well as the Port of Vienna managers Friedrich Lehr and Rudolf Mutz were present. The hall was constructed with a total investment of EUR 4.5 million. The “Salzlager 2“ increases the storage capacity for road salt from 20,000 tons to 45,000 tons in the Port of Vienna.

According to Wien Holding the new hall is the biggest salt depot in Europe. The hall is divided into five boxes, each 560 m². The total storage capacity for bulk road salt for winter service is about 20,000 m³. The conveyor system can move 200 m³/h for storage and 180 m³/h for roll out.

The new building at the Port Vienna Freudenau serves as a logistic hub for Vienna’s winter service, which is managed by the department Magistratsabteilung 48. The facility receives road salt in rail wagons, which is produced by Salinen Austria, which is then put on interim storage and prepared for dispatch on demand. Small lots from suppliers from the Ukraine reach the port by river vessels.
