Rail cargo traffic in Europe about to grow sustainably

Consulting enterprise SCI Verkehr prognosticates rapid recovery of the global rail transport markets

Transport of passengers and goods on the rail is about to register a sustainable growth trend. This is one of the core statements in the new study entitled "The Worldwide Market for Railway Technology 2010-2020" of the independent consulting enterprise SCI Verkehr (Hamburg). In this survey, autors conclude that rail transport markets – after crisis-caused deteriorations and stagnating transport services in the year 2009 – are going back to lasting growth trends again. A major thesis of this survey says that on the long term factors like continuous growth in economy and population in emerging countries, higher requirements to climate protection and public promotions will further increase the demand for rail transport.

According to SCI Verkehr the crisis-caused drop in important markets was smaller than expected. Still better: After the drop in ton-kilometres by 8.4 per cent in 2009, transport services are expected to grow more than 8 per cent in 2010. According to the current prognosis Western Europe will achieve 3.6 per cent growth on average until the year 2020. Railway transport will profit from congestion of road infrastructure as well as from rapidly growing transport costs due to higher energy prices. At the same time transport time on the railway will be reduced by the market opening in most European countries and the proceeding internationalisation of operators. “Rail freight transport will presumably provide 14.7 ton-kilometres in the year 2020, thus almost 50 per cent more than in 2010“, SCI Verkehr gives an outlook.
