Romanian state-owned railway freight carrier CFR Marfa to sell a majority stake to a strategic investor

 
The long-planned privatisation of the Romanian cargo railway company CFR Marfa is to enter the stage of implementation. The Romanian Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) has recently approved the privatisation strategy for the railway enterprise. This was the starting signal for the search of a strategic investor for the company, said Romania’s financial minister Daniel Chiţoiu.
 
This decision means a majority stake in state-owned railway freight carrier CFR Marfa can be sold by June 20. According to transport minister Relu Fenechiu CFR Marfa’s debt amount to about EUR 411 million), including about EUR 137 million owed to the state budget.
 
The national rail freight company CFR Marfă S.A. is deemed to be the biggest rail freight operator of Romania, providing the followng services: transport of goods in domestic and international traffic, intermodal traffic, ferry transport to and from railway systems servicing the Black Sea harbours as well as accessory services of the freight rail carriage (i.e. shunting, customs clearance, etc.).CFR Marfă owns a rolling stock fleet made up of 39.000 wagons of different types, 907 electric and diesel locomotives for traction and shunting, and two ferryboats of 12.500 tdw.
