Slight growth in die container segment in the Port of Rotterdam
First half of 2013: Total throughput in the port of Rotterdam decreased by 0.9%; RoRo traffic increased slightly by 2.2%
The container segment at the Port of Rotterdam remained almost stable in the first half of the year compared to last year; this illustrates the half year report. The port experienced a slightly decrease in the number of tonnes by 2% to 61.7 million tonnes. Despite the decline in the weight, the number of containers handled by the port increased a bit by 1% from 5.86 million TEU up to 5.9 million TEU in the first six months of the year. The reason for the recession in weight is the persisting economic malaise in Europe.
RoRo traffic increased by 2.2% up to 9.02 million tonnes. Other general cargo dropped significantly by 23% down to 2.38 million tonnes (2012: 3.08 million). The reason for this decline is primarily the decrease in the import of steel.
The total throughput in the port of Rotterdam in the first half of the year decreased by 0.9% down to 219.7 million tonnes compared to the first half of 2012 (221.7 million tonnes). This was primarily caused by a reduction in the shipment of crude oil. Other sectors were unable to offset this decline.
The financial result stayed virtually the same in the first half a year with EUR 118 million. Compared to the first half of 2012 the result is a million euros less. Income from seaport dues primarily decreased as the result of a moderate rate policy and because of the decrease in throughput. This was offset by an increase in land revenues primarily as a result of new sites leased to customers.
