“Unsatisfying transhipment development“ in Rostock Port

Rostock’s port development company plans to invest EUR 30 million in the year 2013
 
Also in 2012 the north German seaport of Rostock saw a slightly declining trend in throughput. At 21.2 million tonnes (gross) of goods handled last year, the companies at Rostock seaport recorded a 4.6 per cent-decline against 2011. While the annual results liquid cargo showed increases (up five per cent to three million tonnes), and general cargo handling remained at a stable level (550,000 tonnes), in ferry, ro-ro and dry bulk there was a slight decline. In 2012 about 11.15 million tonnes of ferry goods (down 5 per cent) and 1.25 million tonnes of ro-ro goods (also down 5 per cent) passed Rostock’s quay walls. Rolling freight accounted to 58 per cent of total throughput at the seaport of Rostock last year. An annual result of 5.2 million tonnes was achieved in bulk cargo, which means a decline by nine per cent.
 
The number of passengers carried on the lines to Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Poland remained almost stable at 2 million passengers. 7,257 ferry, ro-ro, tanker, cargo and cruise vessels called at Rostock Seaport in 2012, of which 5,426 were ferry vessels. Tonnage handled via the intermodal traffic terminal rose from 1.5 million tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes. 30 intermodal trains are operated every week in Rostock Seaport, two of them with Wels, Upper Austria.
 
In spite of the rather unsatisfying development of cargo volumes in 2012, the port development company invested Euro 39 million in the infrastructure of the seaport last year, emphasises Ulrich Bauermeister, managing director of the port development company “Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH”. For 2013 about EUR 30 million are budgeted for investments, including works at the intermodal transport handling facility, the ferry landing stage at berth 65 as well as the administrative building of the port development company.
