UPS expands global network for healthcare distribution

Global UPS healthcare distribution network is completed by new terminals in Venlo, Singapore and North America

Expanding its global healthcare distribution network, UPS wants to accommodate continued rapid growth in this segment. Driven by strong relationships with healthcare companies and an increasing trend towards outsourcing, the group establishes additional terminals in Asia, Europe, Canada and the United States. The new facilities located in Singapore, Venlo (the Netherlands), Burlington (Canada) and Louisville (USA) bring the total amount of healthcare distribution facilities to 30 locations with a total space of 371,600 square metres.

"We are seeing increased demand from healthcare manufacturers wanting more flexible supply chains. This clear industry trend is driving companies to look for more global solutions and deeper supply chain partnerships," said Bill Hook, vice president, global strategy, UPS Healthcare Logistics. "We have a robust pipeline of healthcare business and are continuing to invest in this industry to meet the fast-evolving needs of our global healthcare customers." With an influx of biologics and temperature-sensitive healthcare products coming into the marketplace, the group’s healthcare facilities also include temperature sensitive capabilities.

The new 22,800 sq. m. building in Venlo is to start operating in the second quarter of the year 2011. It supports the first facility of UPS in Roermond, which was working to its full capacity within about nine months. Strategically located near UPS’s European air hub in Cologne, this terminal will include controlled environments for temperature-sensitive storage and distribution.
