Record throughput at Port of Kiel in the year 2010

Port of Kiel keeps harbour and quay charges at the same level in respect of its partners

Port of Kiel has handled a record volume in the year 2010. With 5.8 million tons in total, last year’s figure was exceeded by 19.3 per cent. Also compared to the pre-crisis results (2007: 5.3 million tons) the Baltic Sea port was able to improve considerably.

The growth driver were ferry lines that link Kiel to Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic states. “We achieved a top throughput result in 2010 and we are on a growth course this year as well. In 2011 we will presumably reach a throughput volume of more than 6 million tons“, said Dr. Dirk Claus, managing director of Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG, in a press talk.

The ferry lines ex Kiel transported well over 30 per cent more cargo in 2010 and increased by more than 1 million tons all together. With 70 per cent of the total throughput they form the spine of the port business. In the container transport segment about 26,000 TEU were handled, around 10,000 20ft-units thereof from Kazakhstan, which came via Riga to the east bank port and were forwarded by block train to West Germany’s hinterland. But now these containers with steel additives belong to the past. They will go via Rotterdam in the future. Bulk cargo throughput declined by about 6 per cent in 2010 to around 1.4 million tons.

Harbour and quay charges will remain unchanged at Port of Kiel in the year 2011. Dirk Claus: „This in respect of our partners, as the shipping industry has not yet completely overcome the consequences of the crisis.“ Only from 1 January 2012 a new tariff will become valid at Port of Kiel.
