Rail Cargo Austria considers closing down BEX-hubs

RCA reckons with around EUR 80 million operating loss for 2009

Everything is to change at Rail Cargo Austria AG these days and weeks. The Management wants to get the contract logistics unit, which is in bad deficit, to good shape. Therefore they consider closing down three cargo distribution centres. “Together with partners from the freight forwarding industry we could provide an area-covering 24 hours service for national distribution of general cargo with 10 hubs“, Friedrich Macher, Spokesperson of the Executive Management, disclosed to journalists. Also service concepts for dangerous goods and bulky goods will be investigated according to his statements.

As for cargo distribution centres for contract logistics, three locations are at risk of being shut down. Greater Wiener Neustadt might be served by the hubs in Vienna in case of a reorganisation. RCA-Manager Macher also considers the hub in St. Pölten as dispensable, on the precondition they can find a good alternative. Tyrol could be served centrally using the hub in Wörgl. The location in Innsbruck would be closed down in such a case as well.

This year Rail Cargo Austria suffers losses of around EUR 500 million in turnover, which is a decline of 18 or 19 per cent on 2008. Managing Director Macher expects an operating loss by around EUR 80 and 90 million. Last year the contract logistics division showed a turnover of EUR 173 million and a negative Ebit amounting to EUR 30 million.
