Vessel troughput up 18 per cent at Mierka Donauhafen Krems

2013 has been a good year for the Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems; Plans for full extension of the port will be launches

The Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems saw significant growth in 2013. Cargo volume rose 13 per cent on the previous year to almost 1.28 million tonnes, Hubert Mierka, managing director, informs the paper NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.

As to the different transport categories, the port of Krems saw the biggest increase in cargo transhipment from vessels, rising 18 per cent to 445,000 tonnes. 500 cargo vessels called the harbour in 2013 and loaded or unloaded cargo at the quay walls. “This means 100 vessels more than last year“, says Hubert Mierka.

Also the other modes of transport showed volume increases in the port of Krems. Rail cargo throughput grew by twelve per cent in 2013 to 270,000 tonnes; trucking volume rose by ten per cent to 560,000 tonnes. The container terminal operated by Metrans (Danubia) Krems GmbH shows a positive development as well.

Agricultural goods and fodder – mainly grains -, fertilisers, industrial raw materials as well as heavy concrete components weighing up to 55 tonnes, used for wind power plants, were important goods that were handled in the Danube port of Krems in 2013. In order to be able to meet future requirements, the port plans „the full extension of the port“, announces Hubert Mierka. There was still 50,000 m² of free area in the port. The Mierka Donauhafen Krems has currently about 70 employees.
