Vienna Airport: 2017 brought slight plus in air freight

For the Vienna International Airport (VIE), the year 2017 was marked by an increase in air cargo volume. The cargo volume (including trucking) increased by 1.9 percent to a total of 287,962 tonnes. At 206,918 tonnes, pure airfreight showed an increase of 1.9 percent, while the trucking volume improved by 1.7 percent to 81,044 tonnes. Flughafen Wien AG just announced these figures in a press release.

With 24.4 million passengers in 2017, the Vienna International Airport registered 4.5 percent more travellers than in the previous year. The number of flight movements was slightly declined with 224.568 takeoffs and landings. 74 airlines served 195 destinations in 70 countries.

In response to the continuous growth in the cargo segment, the Vienna Airport expanded its cargo facilities by 13,000 m² in 2017. The new 1,600 m² Pharma Handling Center with its two temperature zones is currently being built in the expanded Air Cargo Center. Flughafen Wien AG is investing around EUR 1.8 million in the project by autumn 2018.

“In the coming years, further growth is to be expected, especially as the online trade is increasing. Our own investments, but above all the establishment of logistics service providers at the airport, such as cargo-partner, Kuehne + Nagel and, shortly also DHL, are helping to tap the growth potential. DHL will build a logistics centre with around 500 new employees on more than 60,000 m²”, explained Mag. Julian Jäger and Dr. Ing. Günther Ofner, CEOs of Flughafen Wien announced at a press conference.
