Vienna signs EU Charta to strengthen inland ports

Ports of Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Budapest and Brussels jointly develop mobility plans for capital regions

The city of Vienna and the port of Vienna signed an international agreement about strengthening European inland ports on 16 September in Brussels. The EU Charta Connecting with waterways: a Capital Choice" is an initiative of the capitals Vienna, Brussels, Paris, Budapest and Berlin. Apart from strengthening river shipping the aims of this multilateral agreement are developing new mobility plans for capital regions, an institutionalised exchange of experience and a better networking.

The signatory capitals engage themselves through this Charta to further strengthen the role of inland ports in the trans-European networks (TEN). In particular the ports can play a bigger role in linking international long-distance transports and the last mile in cities.

“This agreement makes Vienna and other European cities political pioneer for sustainable logistics in city centres“, financial and economic council‚ vie major Mag.a Renate Brauner said on the occasion of the signing ceremony.

„Ports are far more than berths for ships. They serve as multimodal traffic and goods flow junctions. Thus we are able to offer sustainable and environmentally friendly transportations and hence make a contribution to sustainable logistics", added Rudolf Mutz, Managing Director of the Port of Vienna.

The four capitals see themselves as pioneers for sustainable mobility development within the European Union. The singing of the Charta was an important first step. Now they want to gain more European inland ports for this initiative, as stated in Brussels.
