30 years of Luka Koper terminal

Slovenian port of Koper has a reason to celebrate

30 years ago, on 10 September 1979, the Slovenian Port of Koper has started operating its container terminal. Back then the quay had a length of 150 metres and a width of 33 metres. Vessels with a maximum draft of 9.5 metres could be served with an annual handling capacity of 50,000 TEU. The on-site storage capacity was designed for 2,400 containers and featured 200 reefer outlets and 10,000 sq.m. of covered area.

Today the quayside is 596 metres long, berth depth has been deepened, and the estimated annual handling capacity exceeds 600,000 TEU. Storage capacity amounts to 19,000 TEU. The total storage area at the terminal covers 172,000 sq.m. and features 340 reefer outlets.

In addition to its first container crane – which is still operational – Port of Koper is today equipped with four panamax and two post-panamax cranes, an additional two of which are to be installed in October of this year. Since the late 1990s the port has been connected with Austria and Hungary by means of a regular block train service.
