Almost 25 per cent less turnover for Hapag-Lloyd

Hapag-Lloyd reports steep losses in first half-year

Hapag-Lloyd container shipping company (Hamburg) is struggling with the economic crisis. Although shareholders agreed upon one more capital injection at the amount of EUR 420 million last week, the company showed poor results in its 2009 half-year report.

For the period from January to June Hapag-Lloyd shows a turnover of EUR 2.2 billion. This is 24 per cent less than in the same period last year. The adjusted EBITDA turned from plus EUR 133 million in the first half-year of 2008 to minus EUR 435 million. The main reason therefore was the 16 per cent decline in transport volumes. Average freight charges decreased 20 per cent compared to the first six months of 2008.
