Berger Fahrzeugtechnik illuminates advantages of light semitrailers

Payload-optimised semitrailers reduce diesel consumption and costs per transported ton according to a recent survey

The use of light semitrailers pays for transport companies. This is the core message of a survey conducted by the institutes K+P Transport Consultants (Freiburg) and hwh Transport- und Unternehmensberatung (Karlsruhe) on behalf of the Berger Fahrzeugtechnik company. The survey is titled “Economic and ecologic advantages of payload-optimised vehicles“.

According to the authors the advantage in using payload-optimised vehicles, as opposed to conventional equipment, becomes visible particularly in the considerably reduced costs per transported ton. According to the survey, the cost reduction amounts to 6.1 per cent in mixed long haul and regional transport with different kinds of goods.

Thus transport companies can save 1.52 litres of fuel per 100 km. According to the survey the efficiency advantage for shippers is at least 7 per cent. The consequent use of payload-optimised vehicles would reduce diesel consumption in Germany alone by 54 million litres per year and CO2 emissions by 143,000 tonnes per year.

From the point of view of the authors of the survey, transport enterprises can profit in two ways from payload-optimised vehicles. First, such semitrailers allow to carry part loads along with conventional full loads, particularly in the steel industry, and thus for additional freight revenues; moreover the shipping industry might (which can not be guaranteed) pass the advantages in use partly to transporters. Second, full payload trips are usually opposed to return trips with less load. The lower weight of the vehicle thus reduces fuel costs at the amount of about 1 per cent per 500 kilograms of short weight.
