Danube port Straubing-Sand posts record turnover for 2011

Straubing ensures sustainable growth with a new biomass transport concept for the Danube region

The Danube port Straubing-Sand posted a record in the handling of goods in the year 2011. A total of 4.2 million tons of goods passed the Lower Bavarian port. The watersitde handling in Straubing increased by 5 per cent to 637,000 tons. The main growth driver is biomass logistics – the new core competence of the port – accounting for over three-quarters of all freight ship operations.

On the railway volume grew by 12 per cent to 342 000 tons. With 3.2 million tons of goods, which were transported on the road to or from Straubing-Sand in the past year the truck was the most important mode of transport with a share of 76.4 per cent over ship with 15.3 per cent and railway at 8.3 per cent.

In future, rail transport shall be used to a greater extent. This is reflected in the plan for a new terminal for combined transport in the east of the port area. After the approval by the Federal Railway Office the construction of container terminal could start still in 2012.

Against the background of the raw material change – away from oil and towards bio-based materials – Straubing, as a region of renewable raw materials, now designed an autonomous strategy for the Danube region. The Green Chemistry Belt concept provides for biomass to be harvested locally from the fertile Danube alluvial land and wooded surroundings, converted regionally (e.g. materially and energetically compressed) and used for industrial purposes at central harbor sites. Within this concept Straubing assumes the function as a bridgehead.
