Landside increases compensate for loss in ship throughput in the Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems; flood protection gate has proven
 
Altough cargo shipping business on the Danube had been affected by the sever floods in June, Mierka Donauhafen Krems has been able to increase turnover in the first half of the year 2013. From early January to the end of June they loaded more than 600,000 tonnes of cargo. “This means a 1.8 per cent-increase compared with the previous year", says Hubert Mierka, Managing Director Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH&Co KG, in an interview with the local newspaper NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.
 
According to modal split, the port of Krems registered the biggest increase in rail throughput, which rose 14 per cent to 135,000 tonnes, followed by truck throughput with plus six per cent to 275,000 tonnes. Vessel throughput declined nine per cent to about 200,000 tonnes. “Gravel transport on the Danube have not been as good as last year", says Hubert Mierka.
 
In the first half of the year 210 cargo vessels called the port of Krems. Ships that anchored at the quays during the flood in early June were not affected by this exceptional situation. Hubert Mierka “Our flood protection gate kept the entire port area dry.“
