Multi purpose terminal ElbePort Wittenberge starts operating

ElbePort Wittenberge provides new options for seaport hinterland transport with a trimodal terminal:

The new Multi purpose terminal at ElbePort Wittenberge has started operation on 2 September. As the terminal N° 2 for bulk and general cargo, containers and project loads is finalised, seaport hinterland traffic from Hamburg and regional shipments can now be handled in Wittenberge. The three majority shareholders of the inland port are Carl Robert Eckelmann AG from Hamburg, Eggers Umwelttechnik and the Hamburg Buss Group. More shares are held by regional enterprises such as the rail company Eisenbahngesellschaft Potsdam.

Thanks to its geographic location at the Upper Elbe river between Hamburg and Berlin, and its trimodal link to railway, road and waterway, the inland port meets all requirements to become a new hub for traffic to the emerging markets in eastern Europe, and to industrial locations in central Europe. A vessel takes less than 30 hours for a rotation between Hamburg and Wittenberge.

A special feature and competitive advantage of the ElbePort Wittenberge is the neighbouring 1.5 hectares land plot, which is available for loading and unloading bulk and general cargo, containers and project loads. On the one hand large-sized project loads can be handled, such as components for wind power plants. On the other hand producing enterprises can settle down there as well.

Since its foundation in summer 2009 the ElbePort Wittenberge GmbH has invested about EUR 6 million into the construction of the terminal N°1 for the throughput of liquid goods, which was opened on 1 December 2009, and the construction of terminal N°2 for throughput of bulk and general cargo, containers and project loads. The port can be called and cargo can be put through 24/24 hours, throughout the year.
