New international shuttle train by Intercontainer

Intercontainer-Interfrigo steps up the offer on the route between Germany and Italy

At the beginning of this week Intercontainer-Interfrigo (Basel) has celebrated the premiere of a new regular service. Since 12 April the operator has an overnight-shuttle train between Ulm and Melzo with a stopover in Niederglatt in its intermodal transport program. “With three rotations per week the service has a shifting potential of 6,600 truck trips per year. This saves at least 3,500 tons of CO2“, the enterprise states in a press release.

The UMS Ulm-Melzo shuttle is the first direct link for containers, swap bodies and semi-trailers in the economic regions Ulm/Danube-Iller, Niederglatt/Zurich and Melzo/Milano. The economically and ecologically interesting transport alternative that crosses the Alps will initially be operated twice per week and direction. On 13 June 2010 a third rotation on weekends will complete the program.

Closing for cargo at the Ulm UBF terminal is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.40 p.m. At 10.30 a.m. the next morning the transport units are ready for collection in Melzo. In the opposite direction closing for cargo in Melzo is on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. with the provision in Ulm scheduled for the next morning at 10.45 a.m. Niederglatt has comparable transport dates.

Traction of the tri-national shuttle train is carried out under the control of SBB Cargo AG in cooperation with DB Schenker Rail and Trenitalia. The Melzo terminal offers links for intermodal transportations to or from the national network at Sogemar SpA/Hannibal SpA. The Italian partner offers direct transportations to the seaports Genova Voltri, La Spezia LSCT, Ravenna, Venezia PM and to the Frosinone Terminal, situated south of Rome.
