New training model for freight forwarding apprenticeship in Austria

Austria’s forwarding segment modernises job description for apprentices; exclusively certified experts for final apprenticeship examination

From 2014/15 school year, a new training model will be applied for the junior staff of Austria’s forwarding industry. In the past two years content for training in companies (job descriptions) and vocational school (curriculum) was completely revised and adjusted to practice, informed Walter Mönichweger, President of the professional association for logistics & forwarding, Ewald Braunig (Principal of the vocational school in MItterdorf), Erich Macho (Principal of the vocational school in Vienna) and Günter Pfatschbacher (Principal of the vocational school in Braunau) on a press conference in Vienna on 14 May.

The objective of the modified training model is to increase quality and standardise the professional qualification of graduates from the apprenticeship for forwarding logisticians and forwarding agents.

Therefore the subjects taught in vocational schools will be oriented towards a so-called competence-oriented training, in view of legal basis, selection of transport mode, calculation, disposition, customs and foreign trade, communication, handling, forwarding-related storage and transhipment processes, warehouse management, marketing and sales, German and English as well as quality and environmental management.

This means more hours in vocational school will be spent on the subjects for foreign languages, customs and foreign trade. In future the final apprenticeship examination will exclusively be conducted by certified expert examiners, which shall give the status of “professional A-levels” to the final point of this dual training, and attract more adolescents to the forwarding apprenticeship. In 2012 exactly 791 forwarding agents and 67 forwarding logisticians were trained in about 140 companies in Austria.
