Port of Constantza reports significant growth in cargo throughput

Romanian Black Sea port Constantza: increase in cargo throughput in 2010 but decline in container throughput

 

The Romanian Black Sea port Constantza showed remarkable and mainly positive results for 2010. Total cargo throughput rose 13.2 per cent to around 47.6 million tons in 2010. Sea traffic accounted for about 37 million tons thereof (up 8.3 per cent); Danube river shipping accounted for 10.6 million tons (up 34.6 per cent). Cargo traffic with Austria rose even 72 per cent to 736,000 tons.

Transit throughput of the port of Constantza on the Danube increased 27.4 per cent to 5.9 million tons; Austria traffic accounted for 13.8 per cent of this development, increasing to around 152,000 tons. Maritime transit throughput at the port of Constantza grew 7.9 per cent to 5.5 million tons in 2010; the figures for Austria skyrocketed by 98.4 per cent to 584,000 tons.

On traffic lanes with Austria, the following types of cargo are handled: coal and coke (466,000 tons), fertilisers (203,000 tons), grain, non iron ores, mineral oil products, metal goods and machines. As for the cargo handled by Danube shipping, volumes are as follows: fertilisers (105,000 tons), grain, mineral oil products, non iron ores, then coal and coke with 3,745 tons.

The port of Constantza and its Austrian partner Mierka Donauhafen Krems organised the traditional “Constantza Port Day“ on 14 April in the Abbey of Göttweig.
