Rhenus Midgard puts up milestone in Wilhelmshaven

Lower Saxony bridge by Rhenus Midgard in Wilhelmshaven approved for coal business for 35 years

At the Lower Saxony bridge operated by Rhenus Midgard Wilhelmshaven the sonic barrier of 50 million tons imported coal was broken at the start of this year. MS „Key Action“ coming from Murmansk discharged its load on 14 January in Wilhelmshaven. Since 1976 the location has evolved into an important hub of the Rhenus group in the coal business.

“Normally we don’t have the time to look back on the performance here. The 50 millionth ton that was reached on 14 January makes us proud and is mainly the merit of the current and former employees of our enterprise in Wilhelmshaven“, says the managing director of Rhenus Midgard in Wilhelmshaven, Matthias Schrell. “This success would not have been possible without the longstanding, reliable partnership with our current main customer E.ON,“ he adds.

The Lower Saxony bridge is currently under construction to improve its competitiveness. In addition to setting up a wagon loading station, a second conveyor belt and installing new throughput equipment, the through for coal vessels will bee deepened, which is the focus of our infrastructure improvements. “While the current draught of 15 metres for arriving vessels permits access to large vessels only when partly unloaded, also fully loaded cape-sizers can call at the terminal after the construction works by the state of Lower Saxony and Rhenus are finished. Maximum draft of vessels at the Lower Saxony bridge will then be 18.50 metres“, explains Schrell.
