Romanian seaport of Constantza registered strong decline in container volume in 2009

For the Romanian seaport of Constantza the year 2009 was marked by a severe decline in cargo throughput. With a total volume at the amount of 42.1 million tons the reference figure of the previous year was missed by 32 per cent. Container traffic showed particularly high losses. In this segment the handled volumes fell 57 per cent from 1.38 million TEU in 2008 to 594,299 TEU.

As for liquid bulk cargo the Romanian port handled 18.4 per cent less than in the previous year. In this sector the annual statistics for 2009 shows a value of 11.75 million tons. Dry bulk cargo amounted to 20.69 million tons in total, which is 30 per cent less than in 2008. The General Cargo division posted 3.6 million tons (down 25.2 per cent). The number of seagoing vessels amounted to 4,961 (in 2008: 5,905). Furthermore they handled 6,808 river vessels (in 2008: 8,018).
