Strong year 2010 and ambitious targets for 2011 with WLB Cargo

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH (WLC) profited in 2010 from increased frequencies and the introduction of new offerings

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH (WLC) is boosting its international cargo transport activities. In 2010 the subsidiary of the Wiener Lokalbahnen AG has transported around 3 million tons of goods with more than 3,000 trains. In 2009 transport volume amounted to 2.21 million tons. „We were able to increase the transported volume by about 36 per cent within one year“, managing director Gerald Retscher calculated in the interview with NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.

A major driver of this development was the increased freququency on the routes and the implementation of new offerings. “We increased the number of trains to Hamburg and at the same time launched operation from Port of Koper in Slovenia to terminals in Slovakia“, explains Retscher. The container service from Slovenia to Slovakia is daily operated. This block train is the first railway service of the enterprise on the Semmering route.

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH wants to growth further in 2011 with new block train offerings. „The range of our deliberations is very broad. Though it is too early to speak about projects in detail“, Retscher says restrainedly. The enterprise might put a focus on wagon groups, to reach new customer circles.

Cargo volume has also risen in the route network of Badner Bahn last year. 100.000 tons mean a slight rise compared on 2009. In previous years cargo transport volume had constantly amounted to about 70,000 tons. “Our own route network is of course strongly affected by activities of regional clients“, the WLC head puts into perspective.

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo GmbH will expand its stock of locomotives in 2011. They will ad two electronic locomotives to their 15 electronic and four diesel locomotives. The railway transport enterprise has currently 62 employees; 30 of them working as locomotive drivers.
