bayernhafen group: strong growth in the intermodal segment

Substantial increase of cargo throughput at the six bayernhafen group locations in the year 2010

The bayernhafen group registers a clear uptrend. In the 2010 financial year total throughput at the locations Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Roth, Regensburg and Passau rose 13.4 per cent compared to the previous year to about 29 million tons. The rail cargo segment posted the strongest growth with 32.5 per cent up to 7.1 million tons of goods. The intermodal segment accounted for a substantial part of it, with a rise in container handling of 82 per cent to 357,000 TEU.

Cargo handling by truck accounted for 18.1 million tons (up 11.4 per cent) in the reporting period. Cargo throughput by ship declined by 4.5 per cent to 3.8 million tons. While the locations at Main and at the Main-Danube channel improved, volumes in the Danube ports have dropped. The management of the bayernhafen group explains this by the weak economic recovery in Southeastern Europe, and the consequences of the strong declines in iron and steel goods in the year 2009.

„We sooner left the crisis behind than expected“, Joachim Zimmermann, managing director of the bayernhafen group, resumes positively. For 2011 he announces investments at the amount of about EUR 10 million. Operating business will be boosted by the expansion of own shunting capacities. The major amount of these means is destined for the preparation of new locations.
