Booming container business at Port of Duisburg

Port of Duisburg’s container throughput is clearly above the record level of 2008

Business development in the Port of Duisburg was marked by increases in all cargo segments and a quite positive development in container throughput in the first half year 2010. As for the market segment of containers transported by vessel, train and truck, the world’s biggest inland port registered a 29 per cent increase between January and June compared on the previous year’s period. At 1.1 million TEU the record level of 2008 was clearly beat, as Erich Staake, Duisburger Hafen AG’s Chief Executive Officer said.

Throughput of coal and steel which had suffered particularly hard in 2009, grew likewise at a remarkable rate in the reporting period. According to Staake ship and train transfers in the ports of the duisport group rose by 17 per cent to 13.2 million tons in the first half of 2010. This value comes close to Port of Duisburg’s 2008 record year.
