Bremen ports on the wave of success

Cargo throughput in the Bremen city port and Bremerhaven reaches record level in the first six months of 2011

In the first half year of 2011 the bremen ports were running at full speed. Sea cargo throughput at 40 million tons reached a record level. The statische Landesamt (state office) referred to this figure as the best half-year result since the handelsstatistische Bureau had been established back in 1850. The rise has more than compensated for the slump in sea cargo traffic resulting from the financial and economic crisis. Sea cargo throughput in the bremen ports amounted to about 40 million tons, which means it was 16.2 per cent of 5.6 million tons above the figure of the same period last year. In the bremen city ports volume declined due to losses in bulk cargo by 3.6 per cent to 6.4 million tons. Bremerhaven registered 21 per cent growth to 33 million tons.

Container traffic accounted for about 31 million tons in about 3 million TEU thereof, which means a 25 per cent-increase compared to last year. About 90 per cent of the volume in the bremen ports fell into the category general cargo.
