EU-commissioner Hahn examined the Danube east of Vienna
Austria’s EU commissioner Johannes Hahn visited the area of the via donau pilot project Bad Deutsch-Altenburg
In the course of his journey of several days dedicated to the Danube region strategy, Johannes Hahn, Austria’s EU commissioner, visited also the Danube east of Vienna. He was able to gain an impression of the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg pilot project started in spring. Hahn, in charge of EU regional policy, was accompanied by a delegation of experts, composed of participants from the ministries in charge, the Danube Floodplains National Park, WWF, Lower Austria as well as Hans-Peter Hasenbichler, Managing Director of via donau.
The aim of via donau’s pilot project in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg is to test river engineering measures, which shall make a contribution to sustainably ensure the National park and river shipping business. The project includes plans for renaturation and lowering of river banks, reconnection of the Johler branch, which is coming closer to dry up, as well as optimisation of the low water regulation. Addition of a little coarser Danube gravel shall help to protect the riverbed from further recess. “Preparations are completed, implementation of the works is depending on the water level. As soon as the river allows for it, we will start working at the banks. We are confident to see first results before the end of this year“, Hans-Peter Hasenbichler explained the current status of the project.
The core of the strategy for the Danube region is an action plan, including concrete actions in the sectors transport, energy and environment. “via donau and Austria’s federal ministry of transport, incooperation with Romania’s ministry of transport assumed the role as coordinators of the issue of navigation on the Danube. Hans-Peter Hasenbichler: “Our aim is to increase attractiveness of Danube shipping and provide a strong, environmentally friendly transport mean towards Southeastern Europe to Austria’s industry.“
