NYK Line sees tendency to bigger “work animals“

Liner shipping company earn more money again and will serve the routes from the Far East to Europe with bigger container vessels

The large-scale container vessels that have been ordered by shipping companies in boom times are to be delivered consecutively in the coming months and years. This causes headache to the managers of the concerned companies. “In the year 2010 only the worldwide available capacity has risen by 2.1 million TEU. This is a year-on-year increase of about 16 per cent“, Thorsten Kröger, General Manager NYK Line (Germany) GmbH, disclosed last week in Vienna. According to him ship owners are earning money again. However, these gains do not cover the losses of 2009 by far.

Kröger held out the prospect for the use of bigger vessel types on the routes between Europe and the Far East. Units with capacities ranging from 7,500 to 9,000 TEU are currently dominant. “In the future vessels with capacities from 12,000 to 14,000 TEU will be the common models“, the NYK manager gave an outlook. Moreover he appealed to the hosts: „European seaports will have to prepare themselves to be able to cope with the challenges of handling vessels resulting thereof.“
