Prangl supports special project in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg

Handling of concrete segments in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg contributes to the "High & heavy by river barge" initiative

A special project on the banks of the Danube in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg will ensure the supply of materials to a neighbouring wind farm. In cooperation with Mierka Donauhafen Krems and via donau, Prangl has obtained a special permit for commercial handling of concrete segments. This makes a significant contribution to the "High & heavy by river barge" initiative. The objective of this initiative, established by via donau, is shifting heavy and oversized transports onto river barges.

Along a 100 metres-stretch of the Danube banks, concrete sections for use in the wind power industry are being unloaded by harbour specialist Mierka Donauhafen Krems. A bimodal facility was built, which serves as a strategic point between waterway and road. Each week, 1-2 river barges arrive with a load of up to 56 concrete sections and a total average weight of 1,600 tonnes per barge.

Handling duties are assumed by a 400 tonne crawler crane. With a maximum projection of 30 metres, the individual concrete sections, each weighing up to 55.6 tonnes, are either loaded directly onto trucks or held temporarily in specially prepared storage spaces. Due to the tight schedule, each barge must be unloaded within two days.

Up to ten trucks are daily operated between the river bank and the surrounding wind farm. Each transport has a total length of up to 30 metres, a width up to five metres, and a height of almost 4.5 metres. Many of the transports can only be carried out at night.
